We are Foundation Style Dog Trainers. Placing dog training on a spectrum of force-free to balanced is misleading, because it focuses entirely on tools. Getting into the semantics of whether a tool is “good” or “bad” is arbitrary. Many force free trainers utilize harnesses, Halti’s, and Gentle Leaders to stop pulling. These are all, by definition, tools for positive punishment - something added to discourage a behavior. This contradicts a force free label.
Instead of focusing on labels, it is better to focus on ethics:
Does the trainer prioritize the well being of your dog?
Can the trainer articulate why they are doing what they are doing in a way that makes sense to you?
Is the trainer fixing the problem you are paying them to fix effectively?
